SharePoint book - No millions of SharePoint books!
September 2010
So you need a SharePoint book and you are stuck with the amount
of different books from different publishers? Well we have Wrox, Apress, Microsoft
Press and Sams just to name a few... There are books about SharePoint 2010 development,
administration, content management, workflows
and so on. So what the heck should I chose? Here are some things you might want
to consider before searching a special SharePoint book:
- Wrox offers SharePoint books about development and administration
(for the beginner and the professional) as well as books about branding or SharePoint
Designer 2010.
- Apress goes a different way... yes they offer books about SharePoint
2010 development and building solutions too. But instead of SharePoint 2010 administration
the have books about SharePoint 2010 as a collaboration platform, workflows or using
Office and SharePoint together.
- I think Microsoft Press is between both publishers at the top regarding
the subjects of their SharePoint book offer. They have something for the administrator
and developer as well as SharePoint Designer 2010 and SharePoint as a collaboration
platform.
- Sams offers less books compared to Wrox or Apress regarding SharePoint
2010 but what they have are some special subjects next to their development and
SharePoint how-to book: Infopath 2010, Performance Point Service in SharePoint 2010
and SharePoint Designer 2010. That looks like a good choice if you are either interested
in the subject or you are forced by someone ;)
- Other publishers... don’t forget to check other publishers with books about governance,
Visual Studio 2010 and SharePoint 2010 or Silverlight 4.
- Other languages... well I don’t recommend translating SharePoint into other languages
since the translation is really irritating especially in German. And the most helpful
articles in the SharePoint community are written in English. But if you still need
one you can find a SharePoint book in Spanish or German too.
Still you have the choice between books regarding one subject and different publishers...
let’s take a look at SharePoint 2010 development: You have the
choice between 10 books from 6 publishers (while writing this article). Since almost
every book is offered in English you can take a look at the table of contents.
What I do is to take a look at the list of authors and there I find the differences
I need to decide between a book from publisher A and publisher B. Let’s take a look
at my review of the book
Professional SharePoint 2010 Administration.
The style of writing by Todd Klindt, Shane Young and Steve Caravajal encourages
me to read the rest of the book since it’s cool and sometimes funny.
So if you need a SharePoint book you can use the table at the homepage
to filter and sort the offers.
By the way: The results are depending on your preferred language in the browser.
By default you will get books written in English. If you have German or French as
you preferred language you will get books in your preferred language in addition
to the books in English at the end of the results.
