SharePoint 2010 books about administration - a review

September 2010

Right now I have read 2 SharePoint 2010 books: Beginning SharePoint 2010 Administration by Göran Husman and Christian Ståhl and Professional SharePoint 2010 Administration written by Todd Klindt, Shane Young and Steve Caravajal. Both books are published by Wrox.

As the title of both books indicate they have a different target audience... the book for SharePoint professionals require previous knowledge which makes it easier to understand. One important thing has to be mentioned: The title of Beginning SharePoint 2010 Administration is a little bit misleading in my opinion. Yes it tells you the basic things but they are not only for administrators. Indeed they are well written so everyone can and should understand them including project leaders, IT managers, IT professionals, consultants and the indented target group of administrators.

Beginning SharePoint 2010 Administration

If you have only little or no SharePoint experience then this book is right for you since it tells you the concepts and business requirements behind components like lists or items. If you already have SharePoint experience then this book might be right for you too since it includes tables comparing the different versions of SharePoint 2010 and Office 2010. It also covers out-of-the-box features which might be interesting to developers before the start to implement already available features again... I know they do since I’m a developer myself.

The following topics are included in this book:

  1. Introduction to Microsoft SharePoint 2010
  2. Building SharePoint Foundation Sites
  3. Office Integration
  4. Content Management in SharePoint 2010
  5. Managing My Sites
  6. SharePoint Administration
  7. Building Intranets and Internet Portals
  8. Customizing SharePoint 2010
  9. Using SharePoint Designer 2010
  10. Backup and Restore
  11. Installing SharePoint Foundation 2010
  12. Configuring SharePoint Foundation 2010
  13. Installing Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010
  14. Configuring SharePoint Server 2010

What this book does not cover is expert real world scenarios with specific customer problems and needs. I don’t know if any of the available SharePoint 2010 books does that because SharePoint is such a huge platform and the customers’ requirements differ in a wide range.

Anyway it definitely can be recommended if you are looking for SharePoint 2010 books about administration.

Professional SharePoint 2010 Administration

If you need concepts behind basic things like list and items you should stick with the book above. If you are familiar with SharePoint then this book will help you to understand new things in SharePoint 2010. It includes a lot of topics from SharePoint 2010, it has a lot of in-depth knowledge and also provides PowerShell scripts.

The following topics are included in this book:

  2. The New and Improved User Experience
  3. Architecture and Capacity Planning
  4. Installing and Configuring SharePoint 2010

  15. Monitoring SharePoint 2010
  16. Managed Metadata Service Applications
